Early life:

Tendulkar was conceived at Nirmal Nursing Home, Dadar (Bombay) on 24 April 1973. Ramesh Tendulkar is his father and Rajni is his mother. Rajni worked in the insurance business. Tendulkar attended Bandra East’s Indian Education Society New English School. Achrekar coached him at Shivaji Park during the evenings and mornings.


Career:

Tendulkar was chosen to represent Bombay at the Ranji Trophy in November 1987. Tendulkar played his first Test against Pakistan at Karachi in November 1989. Tendulkar was the youngest to make his debut in Tests as well as ODIs.

Over 200 matches were played, with more than 50 centuries scored and over 15,000 runs. In addition to playing over 500 internationals, he has scored over 50 hundreds and played in more than 10,000 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar was the first Test Cricket player to reach fifty centuries, to have scored 12,000, 13,000 and 14,000 runs respectively, to be the first Indian cricketer to surpass 11,000 runs and to achieve 10,000 runs in a single day international. He is also the first player in ODI Cricket history to exceed 1000 runs.

His major contribution to the Indian winning the Cricket World Cup 2011 was crucial. Sachin Tendulkar was the first man to reach fifty centuries in Test Cricket History, the first Indian batsman with 12,000, 13,000 and 14,000 runs respectively, and first Indian player to surpass 11,000 runs in Test Cricket. He is also the first person to hit 10,000 runs in a single day international and first player to exceed 1000 runs in ODI Cricket.

Tendulkar assumed the role of captain for the Indian cricket team in 1996. However, he wasn’t performing well. Sourav Ganguly was elected to replace him as captain after the 2000 loss against South Africa. He continues to play an integral part in team strategy planning and was appointed vice-captain in 2007.

Tendulkar declined the offer to be captain once more. Tendulkar felt the team would be more benefit if Mahendra Sing Dhoni was given the captain’s position. Tendulkar, despite being a great player, was beginning to slide down and was eventually booed from the field during the March 2006 game against England. Tendulkar sustained a shoulder injury that required surgery. However, he was allowed to return to the field after his doctors assured him. He was able to return from the injury and become the top scorer against Bangladesh.

Tendulkar announced his retirement from the ODIs on December 2012 Tendulkar retired as a Twenty20 cricket player in October 2013. He then retired on the 16th of November 2013, after playing in his 200th Test match against West Indies at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Tendulkar was a part of 664 international cricket matches and scored 34,357 runs.

Tendulkar was awarded many international and national awards for his achievements in Cricket. Arjuna Award (1994), Rajiv Ghandi Khel Ratna (97-98), Padma Shri 1999, Maharashtra Bhushan Award 2001, Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Bharat Ratna (2013) are some of the many national honors that Tendulkar has received.
