When it comes to business laptops, HP stole the show for a while. This is made possible by the advanced innovations that the company introduces from time to time. This year, HP released an updated version of its already impressive Elite Dragonfly laptop, the Elite Dragonfly G2. Here we will take a closer look at this laptop and discover its advantages and disadvantages. We will also include some alternatives to the G2.
HP’s EliteBook line of notebooks has focused exclusively on the business sector since its launch. It’s hard to find on the shelves of PC stores around the world because it’s a high-end professional product designed to meet the needs of businesses and enterprises. The second generation of the Dragonfly G2, which was recently unveiled, includes many updates to key components of its predecessor. The Dragonfly G2 allows buyers to customize the convertible laptop to meet their needs at checkout, more on that later. Let’s start with the design and styling of the G2.
Design and styling
Elite Dragonfly G2 retains all the style and design elements of the original Elite Dragonfly. It retains the machined magnesium body that gives it a sharp katana look, but the weight of the pen. For a high-end laptop, the G2 weighs less than a pound. Yes, you read that right.
The difference between milled and cast magnesium is easily seen in its high quality. Gone is the boring gray color found on most devices. Here, the subtle blue color of the machined magnesium finish adds to the elegance of this convertible business laptop that is sure to turn heads in the boardroom or during a business meeting. The chromed HP logo on the lid and the silver edges are preserved from the original Dragonfly Elite.
In terms of I/O ports, the convertible offers the minimum number of ports needed for professional use with two Thunderbolt 4.0 ports, a 3.5mm all-in-one combo jack for audio and microphone, and an HDMI 2.0 port on the right side. On the left side, you’ll find a USB Type A 3.1 port, a Kensington lock port, a SIM card slot for use with an LTE or 5G modem, and a power button.
The main improvement of the Elite Dragonfly G2 convertible over the previous generation of business laptops is that you can customize the device at the point of sale. This includes the screen, and here’s a little preview of the type of screen you can get on the Dragonfly G2, see the image below.

When you place an order with HP, you can choose from three options. First, we have two 13.3-inch Full HD LED touchscreens. One with HP’s Sure View Reflect (we’ll get to that in a minute) and one without. Although both are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the panel with Sure View Reflect has a higher brightness of 1,000 nits, while the other has a brightness of 400 nits. This extra brightness ensures minimal reflection and optimal visibility. Next we have a 4K UHD panel with the same protection and 550 nits of brightness, but without Sure View Reflect.
The Sure View Reflect terminology we used earlier is a screen privacy technology developed by HP that prevents others from viewing your screen. If you look at the page, you will see a copper or white display. In short, it prevents eavesdroppers, competitors or other business partners from spying on you at work.
It was first introduced in the Elite Book series and developed in G2. While other manufacturers, such as Dell and Lenovo, are only just beginning to see the value and usability of the privacy screen, HP is ready to improve it.
Still about the screen: The HP Elite Dragonfly G2 has narrow bezels on the sides of the screen, but the top and bottom bezels are slightly thicker. On top is the HD + IR webcam, which in turn has an electronic privacy shutter that can be activated via the keyboard. Yeah, H.P. thought of everything.
Performance and battery life
Now, the part we’ve all been waiting for: What is the speed and lifetime of the Dragonfly G2 on a full charge? This is where HP focuses its innovation and adaptation capabilities the most.
There is not one basic option for this laptop. This means that you are completely free to choose the specifications of this business convertible that suit you. You can choose from a total of 11 options. Each has a different configuration in terms of CPU and RAM.
For the processor and memory, you can start with an Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor with 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and Intel UHD Graphics. It could be the top variant, powered by an Intel Core i7-1185G7 processor with 32GB of LPDDR4 RAM and Intel Iris Xe and vPro graphics.
Of course, the price will vary depending on the processor and RAM combination you choose. The performance of Intel’s 11th generation processors. The generation has already proven to be exceptional. Intel has taken a big step forward with its 11th generation Tiger Lake processors. Generation Gaming has brought premium gaming to ultra-thin laptops and notebooks – with the latest technology. With the integrated Iris X graphics card, you can play many complex games without the need for a discrete graphics processor.
Intel’s vPro and Evo technologies integrated into the 11th generation processors. Generation, improve business performance with enterprise-class performance, hardware-based security and remote management capabilities, and stability. However, to take advantage of the potential of the Intel vPro platform, you should choose configurations with an i5 or i7 processor.
Desktop and multitasking performance would be 23% and 52% better than AMD’s 4th generation Ryzen processors, respectively. Intel’s addition to vPro is the Intel Evo platform, which is a seamless integration of continuous performance. The Evo platform uses a variety of technologies to integrate features tailored to today’s dynamic lifestyles.
Whether it’s exciting graphics, smooth performance or phenomenal battery power, it’s all part of the Intel Evo platform. This brings us to the battery figures. You can choose between two configurations. The first is a 36Wh 2-cell battery that gives you a battery life of 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on the screen you choose. This is to be expected when you navigate to the Sure View Reflect screen. If you choose the best processor, we recommend the 56-watt 4-cell battery, which will give you almost 8 hours of work.
Connection and storage
With the many customization options of the Dragonfly G2 laptop, HP gives you the choice of using a mobile broadband connection. Here you can add the Intel XMM 7360 LTE modem or the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem. For local wireless connectivity, you get the latest Wi-Fi 6 support as an integrated Intel Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 combo.
HP has 9 storage options for the Dragonfly G2, which are selected at the time of order. These range from a 128GB PCIe Gen 3 x2 NVMe M.2 SSD to a 2TB PCIe Gen 3 x4 NVMe M.2 TLC SSD. However, it should be noted again that the price varies depending on the components you choose.
Keyboard and audio
The HP Elite Dragonfly G2 uses an updated backlit waterproof keyboard. The keys are precise and extremely comfortable. The unique coating of the keys gives your fingers a soft feel. The depth and durability offered are of the highest quality. It is possible to add a Glass Clickpad or Microsoft Precision Touchpad, but these are only available with the Sure View Reflect screen.

The audio system was supplied by Bang and Olufsen. The speakers are located on the sides of the keyboard. Sound quality is good at high volume, but one must understand that the unit is intended for professional use, not entertainment. There are three microphones, two of which are on top for excellent clarity when making voice or video calls, while the third is facing outwards to pick up and block out ambient noise.
Peripheral equipment and prices
Elite Dragonfly 2 can be purchased with a variety of branded peripherals. Delivery includes a Wacom pen with application start button, a 65 watt power supply for fast charging and a 1 meter premium power cable with C5 connector. You can also add additional peripherals to your cart, from travel mice to backpacks and various adapters. Again, they target the corporate and business sector, those who want to buy in batches or in bulk for their employees.
The Elite Dragonfly G2 is currently only available through the HP store, where you can choose and order your configuration and various combinations. The standard warranty is 3 years, but various extended support options are available for an additional charge. A Dragonfly G2 with minimal parts and no add-ons will cost you around 1500 USD. If you want a more complete package with the best components and highest configurations, with 5 years of comprehensive support and MS Office pre-installed, you’ll get about $4,500 back.
Pros and cons
Elite Dragonfly G2 is a high quality professional laptop with the best technical features and a stylish look. Several smart features add to the usability of this laptop. It is light, thin and portable. It uses the latest generation of Intel notebook processors and technologies to deliver the best business performance.
However, there are some problems that need to be addressed, such as the generalized incompatibility factor. You cannot use a 5G modem if you want Sure View Reflect to remain private. Some storage options are not compatible with Intel Evo and Sure View Display. In this case, you are forced to spend more money for more storage capacity. Sure View Reflect is only available on FHD displays and consumes more battery power.
The laptop’s slim form factor means that everything inside is welded together. This meant almost no volume for updates. In addition, free office tools are not pre-installed. The laptop bag is also not included and must be purchased separately. After all, for the price you end up paying for a laptop with a better configuration, you could get four better Apple MacBook Air options, which shows how overpriced the Dragonfly G2 is.
With the latest features and technology, the Dragonfly G2 gets the job done. However, there are options that don’t reach the Dragonfly G2’s specs, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and 7 Plus or the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano or even HP’s Spectre x360 13, but still offer plenty of performance.
