We can buy a lot of laptops these days, but finding one that’s both affordable and powerful can be a chore. Choosing the right one means figuring out whether you need all the features a laptop can offer you, which is why we took a close look at one of the cheapest and most basic models out there: the HP Envy 17t.
With the launch of the new MacBook, Apple has made a significant effort to put a premium-priced machine into people’s hands. However, its computers are generally out of reach of the majority of people who want one, and the new MacBook’s high price isn’t the only thing that makes it out of reach for most. While the new MacBook is an excellent machine, it’s still a MacBook, which means that it comes with numerous compromises. For example, the new MacBook isn’t actually any more portable than its predecessor. Even if you try to remove all the external ports, it will still be thicker than most other laptops.
While it’s true that a cheap laptop can get you through the day, it’s not ideal for heavy duty work. A good workstation is much more powerful, and can do so much more than a laptop. If you need to do heavy-duty tasks on your computer, then you should seriously consider investing in a new machine, and we’ve picked the best ones for you.
The ASUS L510MA-DS04 15-inch laptop is an entry-level laptop designed as an affordable option for casual users and young students. The price is perhaps the most attractive feature. If you don’t want to deal with a rather sluggish laptop, you’ll have to reckon with much less than average performance. But given the affordable price of the L510MA, I think it will find its place with those who will only use it for basic daily tasks. Think about writing emails, comfortable web browsing, reading and editing documents or using social media. With the Intel Celeron N4020, you only have a small amount of processing power. The same goes for the amount of available system memory – only 4 gigabytes. If you opt for the ultra-cheap ASUS, expect a less than impressive experience. Check availability and pricing on Amazon If you don’t mind the stripped-down version of Windows that the L510MA comes with, I recommend you stick with it. It consumes fewer resources than a full Windows. And once you decide to say goodbye to Windows in Mode S, that decision is final. You can’t go back. ASUS offers two alternatives for this model. The two devices are essentially the same, but differ in size. The ASUS L210 is an excellent ultraportable for the undemanding, and the L410 is a slightly smaller and perhaps more versatile version of that laptop.
Is it worth buying?
At the time of writing, the ASUS L510MA-DS04 was selling for just under $300. I can’t imagine a more reliable 15 laptop for this price range. The Lenovo IdeaPad 1 I mentioned recently could be a decent option, but that depends on whether you’re happy with less memory and a smaller screen. However, if your budget allows, you should really consider the Acer Aspire 5 A515-56-363A. Sure, it’s a little more expensive, but it offers a better Core i3 processor and a much better screen than the ASUS. So if your budget is limited to $300, it’s best to opt for this 15-inch laptop. It will suit most young students and occasional users who are not fussy. But if your budget is flexible, I would wait until the aforementioned Aspire 5 goes on sale.
